irena-sendler02Irena Sendler (née Krzyżanowska, in Poland commonly referred to as Irena Sendlerowa, 15 February 1910 – 12 May 2008)  was a Polish  Catholic social worker who served in the Polish Underground  and the Żegota resistance organization in German-occupied Warsaw during World War II. Assisted by some two dozen other Żegota members, Sendler saved 2,500 Jewish children by smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto, providing them with false documents, and sheltering them in individual and group children's homes outside the Ghetto.

Irena sympathized with Jews  from childhood. Her physician father died in 1917 of typhus contracted while treating Jewish patients. She opposed the ghetto-bench system that existed at some prewar Polish universities and as a result was suspended from Warsaw University for three years.

oblates_hanh_on_rooIn 1912, the Oblates begun their permanent ministry among Inuit in Chesterfield Inlet. It was initiated and then continued by Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), who till today form almost entirely the clergy personnel of the Diocese of Churchill-Hudson Bay. They are responsible for traditional pastoral and sacramental ministry but also promote and support lay ministries, work with families and encourage youth leadership.

Today there are 16 established missions in the Diocese which covers almost whole Nunavut. Oblates are divided according to the needs of particular regions. Each missionary has main place where he resides and from which he visits from 2 up to 5 others missions. Oblates colaborate strictly with local leaders and other pastoral workers. Local leaders are fully responsible for the rhythm of prayer and other pastoral services in the communities in the absence of a priest.
