The Story

Catherine Nolan

The Story. Acrylic on Canvas.

Communication is central to love. Sometimes people communicate in conversations, where each person contributes thoughts and feelings, but at other times story-telling is more appropriate. Telling a story allows a person to reveal more about himself, even if the story is not about him. The person listening is not only able to learn about the story-teller, but is also able to express affection and love through the act of listening. Stories bring people together.

In this painting, the love represented is the pure, childlike love of siblings. The innocence is emphasized in the pastel colours used and the background which is slightly out of focus – the scene is innocuous and simple. The only details that matter are the two children and the rose bushes in the foreground. Time seems to have stopped on this summer afternoon; the story is all that matters. This experience of timelessness is both a proof of love and an opportunity for the communication of such love. Love is what gives importance to the story – it is what makes the listener interested, and what urges the story-teller to speak.
