Higher Depths
Maria Dolores Reyes

Tumbled, jutting rock all cracked by powers,
Buried up above the shadowed trees,
Shoving closer, upwards, where no towers
Rise to challenge stony barren knees,
Scoured by many snow falls, icy showers –
Reach the door of heaven: here the keys.
Stand in awe beneath them, feel their weight,
Stagger on their slopes, they cannot bend.
They shrug off ragged, rough and rocky slate,
Snow in avalanches, stones they send
To hold their wrath and calm their hate;
But even when they’re conquered, never end.
Scratch through dusty grass-leaves, lift the roots,
Bare the skull-deep stone all flat beneath.
Dead and dying dirt brings forth new shoots,
Helplessly they grow on dragons’ teeth.
Down upon the path beneath your boots
Tiny blossoms burst from dainty sheath.
