Buried Gardens

Catherine Nolan

Buried Gardens. Watercolor.

The story behind this painting is a rather obvious one. A little girl, tired of being inside all winter, longs to be outdoors working in her garden again. She demonstrates her firm hope in the coming spring by carrying a trowel and basket of corms – maybe gladioli or freesia, which can be planted in the spring. Nevertheless, the weather outside shows no sign of thaw, and she may have to spend long weeks waiting for the snow to melt from her gardens.

I promise that this will be the last window and shelves painting I’ll do for a while.
