The Iliad - 1747

The other day I walked into a second-hand store, and because it’s most important, I looked through the book section. I found a copy of the Iliad in Greek, which is cool – and only upon buying it ($0.50) and taking it home did I realize how old it was.

I’m taking this to mean that it was typeset (printed?) in 1747 by the Foulis brothers, at the Glasgow Academy.

Not only that, but any English in the book uses ‘f’ instead of ‘s’ – I’m told this is a sign of 17th century and early 18th century work.

And it was signed on the first page by ‘H. McNeil’ in 1869.

I just wish I could read Greek. But it’s not really that important, because the whole book is also translated into Latin! Really interesting; the Foulis brothers seem to have some history behind them. Anyone else want to tell me anything about the book?

  2. That’s so neat! What an antique!

I just picked up some kids’ mystery books set in ancient times at a 2’nd hand store. They’ve been recently written by Caroline Lawrence, an American living in England. I haven’t read any yet, but they look okay.

  3. Thanks! It is neat. I’m still trying to research it more and find out how rare this actually is.
